Air filters trap dust and other particulates in your HVAC system, which makes them instrumental in maintaining good indoor air quality. In today’s post, AC & Refrigeration Works explains why air filters need to be replaced regularly.
Why Do You Need to Replace Your Air Filter?
Most of today’s home heating and cooling systems are equipped with an air intake vent that pulls air in, heats or cools it, then releases it indoors. The air filter is installed at the air intake and traps particles such as dust and pollen. Over time, air filters become clogged. If they’re neglected, a number of problems can result. Accumulated particles can block airflow, for example, putting more strain on the heating and cooling systems and resulting in premature wear and high energy consumption.
Some of the trapped particles in clogged air filters may also become loose and recirculate through the air ducts and into your living areas. This can result in mold and mildew growth, which can trigger allergies and other respiratory problems. Dust can also enter the HVAC system electronics and cause damage.
Changing the Air Filter
Fortunately, these problems can be prevented with regular HVAC maintenance, of which air filter replacement should be a part. HVAC systems in an average-sized home require the air filter to be changed every three months. During months of heavy HVAC usage, a monthly replacement may be necessary. Make it a point to check your air filter at least once a month and order replacement filters if it’s clogged.
Air filters are designed to be user-replaceable, which means you don’t have to set an appointment with your HVAC technician to get it replaced. Most HVAC systems feature air filter covers with tabs that can be snapped off and back on. When buying replacements, it’s important to choose filters that are the exact same size as the old one. Choosing one that’s too small or too big may result in air leaks that would defeat the purpose of having an air filter. Also, consider upgrades like electrostatic or pleated air filters. Your HVAC technician can help you choose the type of air filter that best fits your HVAC model.
