Problems with your heating or cooling system can happen at any time. But keep calm–not all of them are emergencies, and some can be put off for another day. In today’s post, local HVAC company AC & Refrigeration Works shares a look at what qualifies as an HVAC emergency and what you should do if you have one.

Situations That Qualify as HVAC Emergencies

First, take stock of the situation and ask yourself the following questions:

• Does it persist even if I turn off the power and/or water? If the problem persists even when you turn off the HVAC system at the panel, then it certainly is an emergency. Water heaters and certain types of heating systems utilize water, and if cutting the water at the source doesn’t stop the situation, then this also qualifies as an emergency.

• Does it represent a danger to the health and safety of my family? A heating system breaking down in the middle of a harsh winter is a common example, which we fortunately don’t have to worry about, given our climate. However, issues that immediately affect indoor air quality can be considered an emergency if some of your family members rely on filtered air for their health.

• Does it get in the way of your plans or routine? For example, if turning off your HVAC system denies you sleep before you need to go to work, or if you have to cancel important plans because you need to deal with the issue, then it can constitute an emergency. This also applies to other members of your family: lack of air conditioning may make an infant uncomfortable and keep you awake all night.

What to Do In Case of an Emergency

In the event of an HVAC emergency, the first thing you need to do is stop it from getting worse. Turn off the HVAC power source at the panel, as well as the valve for its water source. You may have to turn off the water mains as well, though this will leave you without tap water until the problem is fixed.

Once that’s done, call an HVAC technician like us who offers 24/7 emergency services. Not all technicians offer this service, but we do, because we know that there are HVAC emergencies that can’t be put off until the next day.
